Sunny was hatched under a mountain in the cluster of mountains known as The Claws of the Clouds Mountains, in the SkyWing territory. While she was under the mountain, she was seen to be one of the most optimistic dragonets and was the only one who did not complain about the guardians (Kestrel, Webs, and Dune), even when the others did.

When the five dragonets escaped from under the mountain and were captured by the SkyWings, Sunny was separated from the rest because of her missing tail barb. She was intended to be a gift for Princess Burn; however, during the escape made by the rest of the dragonets, she was freed from her cage by Peril, who burned through the metal bars.

After the escape from the Sky Kingdom, Sunny and the Dragonets of Destiny headed through the Kingdom of Sea, then headed through the other Kingdoms. Shortly before the volcanic eruption on the NightWing Island, Sunny found herself caught in a predicament when one of the dragonets she was raised with, Starflight, confessed his love for her. It was then made known that she saw him as a brother, and the attack on the NightWings continued.

After the volcanic eruption, it was revealed that the dragonet prophecy was fake, which Sunny refused to believe. She continued to try to fulfill the prophecy, venturing into the Kingdom of Sand and landing in the scorpion den and meeting Thorn, who is later revealed to be her mother. During that time, she was traded for a hostage and taken to Burn’s stronghold. There, she saw Queen Scarlet, and was released by Peril, Queen Scarlet’s champion, when she came to retrieve Scarlet. During the rescue attempt by Thorn and The Outclaws, Sunny learned that she was half NightWing when she told Thorn that she’d seen a stuffed NightWing in Burn’s tower.

Shortly after that, a storm forced her to land at Jade Mountain, where she met Stonemover and learned that he was her father. When Sunny returned to her friends, they sent messages to the three Princesses through Dreamvisitors. The messages told them all to meet at Burn’s Stronghold. At that meeting, Sunny found the Eye of Onyx in the dead Queen Oasis’s mouth and gave it to Thorn. She then proclaimed Thorn to be Queen. Months later, she and the other Dragonets of Destiny founded Jade Mountain Academy, an inter-tribal school.
