Clay is the mudwing dragonet that hatched from the bloodred egg underneath the mountain range called the Claws of the Clouds Mountains, with the other dragonets of destiny. Having been the first to hatch he is considered to be the bigwings by mudwing standards, which is the oldest and biggest of mudwing siblings. Without a mudwing caretaker, Kestrel, the skywing caretaker had assumed Clay was trying to kill the others in their eggs when he was merely trying to help them hatch as is instinct for any mudwing. Whilst under the mountain Clay is extremely thoughtful and kind, the opposite of what he was thought to be during his and the other dragonets’ hatching. He struggled with battle training with Kestrel as Clay is not one who wishes to fight, something that once more seemed to contradict the opinion of his caretakers based on his instincts when hatching.
The one to first leave the caves the dragonets live in is in fact Clay due to him floating too far down the river in the caves system the dragonets grew up in. He was then saved by Tsunami (the seawing dragonet of destiny), and the two were promptly out of the cave. And Clay after having been injured was quite happy to learn that mud was able to heal his wounds. They then made it back of course but were followed by the Skywing Queen Scarlet who placed all the dragonets minus Sunny and Glory, into her arena to fight. This is how Clay met and befriended the skywing Peril, who eventually helped them, begrudgingly, escape. Where he dragonets then travel to the kingdom of the sea.
Once at the kingdom of the sea, Tsunami is separated from the other Dragonets. Clay and the others are put into a guest cave, however it is made apparent that Clay is not exactly welcome due to him being a mudwing and he is chained up to the floor of the cave. When a storm floods, he is then released by Tsunami and they all travel to the cave that Blister, one of the queenly prospects for the war, is reserved to have as hers. After he and the other Dragonets escape from the Seawing palace as it is bombed and after having been placed in an electric eel prison, Clay and the other dragonets escape to the rainforest kingdom.
Clay stays with the other dragonets in the rainforest kingdom until they all meet at Burn’s stronghold in order to end the War of Sandwing Succession once and for all. However, things do not go nearly as according to plan. Blister had gifted two dragonbite vipers, the only snake without a cure that can kill a dragon, to her sister and rival Burn, who was bit, but the second snake had gone toward Fatespeaker, a nightwing meant as a backup in case Starflight failed or died. Clay heroically jumped in to save her. However was bitten and began to die. However, Peril came to the rescue and scooped out any and all of the venomized areas. Clay was hatched from a blood red egg, meaning his scales were immune to Peril’s firescales that constantly burned. She was able to save Clay’s life, although he was left with a limp.
Months later, Clay alongside the other dragonets of destiny, minus glory, founded the Jade Mountain academy, an inter-tribal school where a dragon from every tribe in pyrrhia was able to attend to learn and come together. As a founder he was also a security figure for the academy as well as running the academy’s prey center where everyone was able to get food.
