Sunny WoF

In today’s SEO blog post, we will be discussing Sunny, one of the five Dragonets of Destiny from the series Wings of Fire by Tui T. Sutherland. Let’s dive in!

Warning: the following content contains spoilers for numerous areas of WoF- read at your own risk.

Who Is Sunny?

Sunny is an adult female SandWing/NightWing hybrid, daughter of Queen Thorn and Stonemover. She was known for her goldenish scales, green eyes, and lack of tail barb, however Sunny was much, much more than this in truth. As well as the smallest in size out of the Dragonets of Destiny, oftentimes she felt unseen and unheard considering that she was not taken very seriously by her fellow prophesied friends. It wasn’t exactly because they didn’t think she had quality ideas- they just thought she was too sweet and cute and innocent to be sent into dangerous things. What they didn’t quite realize is that instead of this making Sunny feel safe and protected and cared for, it made the dragonet feel swept under the rug and ridiculed.

Sunny: The Cheerleader, Go-Getter, & Problem Solver

Despite Sunny’s major contributions to vital events throughout the series, they truly only started to take Sunny seriously closer to the end of Arc #2 when they were all dealing with Darkstalker. Even so, it was shown in Moon’s mindreading that Sunny was concerned about others taking her seriously.

For example, when Sunny had an idea to do something when discussing plans, often times she was not listened to unless she told the idea to someone else. Then and only then did that same plan become an amazing and functioning idea that would work perfectly- yet often changed so Sunny wouldn’t take any risks and she would more or less sit on the sidelines. Referring to what was mentioned above- Sunny was not happy with this arrangement and would have much rathered to be held as an equal to the other dragonets and not some fragile little hatchling they needed to protect.

Growth Through the Books

In the first arc, Sunny is shown to be a bubbly blabbermouth that is just a little too clueless for her own good at the moment. This is portrayed in several instances, most comically when it was mentioned that the Dragonets were stashing a pile of rocks and Sunny spilled the beans to Dune, one of their three guardians at the time.

In Arc 2, Sunny has clearly matured to a visible extent, and is typically cool, calm and collected in front of the students. The majority of this character change appears to be a result of both the events of the Brightest Night & The Dark Secret. However, it is shown by Moonwatcher’s mind reading that not all of this is authentic internally.

What Do You Think?

  • Do you think that Sunny’s positive attitude would be uplifting or annoying in your presence?
  • Do you think that the other dragonets of destiny mistreated Sunny at times?
  • If you were Sunny, how would you deal with this?

Yours Truly,
