Flame was introduced to the book with the other false dragonets by Fatespeaker. He became smug when Morrowseer said that Flame was the only one who would certainly replace Glory. When Morrowseer ordered the false dragonets to kill Starflight, Flame happily agreed. Starflight ran away. Flame quickly caught up to Starflight, but was taken to the dungeons along with Ochre when he was tricked by Starflight and told a guard that he was "trying to kill a NightWing dragonet." While in jail, he met Deathbringer and asked him about being an assassin. He later snuck away, with Starflight and Fatespeaker to ask him what it took to be an assassin.
Deathbringer dreamily spoke of his encounter with Glory, which Flame thought of stupid and disregarded. He left the jail, tired of listening to Deathbringer's story.
In Wings of Fire, when Viper was just about to stab Fatespeaker with her venomous tail, Viper's tail accidentally scratched Flame in the face as she tried to regain her balance and she fell into the lava river. Later in the book, Starflight and Fatespeaker carried Flame out of the NightWing healer's room and through the tunnel to the rainforest, claiming they had been ordered to do so by the NightWing queen. They took him to the RainWing healers.
After his injury, Flame spent most of his time in the healer's hut, When he was asked to guide Sunny and Tsunami to the Talons of Peace's camp, he refused. But, Flame, who had followed Sunny and Tsunami, came with them to the Talons of Peace after all. He reunited with his mother, and then left with her.
In the Wings of Fire book, Moon Rising, Flame wof enrolled into Jade Mountain Academy, and was a member of the Gold Winglet. Moonwatcher and Qibli suspected him of being the murderer of Bigtail and Carnelian. However, after getting a view inside Flames mind, Moonwatcher decided that he was innocent. Flame seemed to be bitter and resentful towards other dragons, He appeared to have scary and dangerous thoughts and tended to avoid other dragons.
Once Darkstalker saw Flames face, he wanted to heal it. Flame wof was reluctant and scared at first, but he got excited about his new face. However, Flame was angry at Stonemover because Stonemover had refused to heal him, so Flame tried to murder him. He was caught just in time.
