Today we are going to fly to the Sky Kingdom and take a closer look at their Queen, Ruby from the Wings of Fire books.
Ruby, who is also known as Tourmaline, is the queen of the SkyWings and she first appeared in the WoF book, Escaping Peril. Ruby's personality, memories, and appearance were initially kept in an earring that was enchanted by Chameleon using Darkstalker's old scroll. However, after Peril removed the earring during her royal challenge against Ex-Queen Scarlet, Tourmaline's memories, appearance, and strength returned. After the challenge, Ruby asked Chameleon to create a second enchantment to restore her physical appearance as Ruby but retain her original memories. She is currently the queen of the SkyWings and lives in the SkyWing palace with her son, Cliff. In the WoF books, Ruby feared Peril the moment she saw her. In Ruby’s mind, Peril was labeled as a monster after Peril did all the horrible things she was commended to do. The first thing Ruby did when she became queen was banishing Peril from the Sky Kingdom. But once Peril saved Cliff and didn’t kill him, Rudy forgave Peril and gave her the right to come into the kingdom.
Ruby loves her son Cliff more than anything in the kingdom. She loves Cliff with all her heart, though Scarlet considered Cliff to be an ordinary dragon. Cliff didn’t want to be ordinary and considered it to be an insult. Ruby always told her son that he was special. Ruby would do anything to protect her son. In the WoF book, Escaping Peril, Ruby thought that Peril was going to kill her son, and Ruby was going to do anything to stop Peril. Cliff takes after Ruby in a lot of ways, like the way he stands, his smarts, and he is gentle just like his mother.
Tourmaline had dark orange scales and wings, while Ruby has deep red scales. Her snout was also described to be slightly longer than Ruby's. Her talons were razor-sharp, and she had startling speed, and plenty of strength. Tourmaline was larger and stronger than Ruby. Ruby wears ruby's around her eyes, and on her claws. She also has a teardrop earring.
Ruby wanted to become queen, but because of Peril and of Scarlet, she decided to act mousey and obedient to stay alive. She appeared polite and quiet to outsiders, but it surprised everyone all across Pyrrhia by acting confidentand decisive after getting the throne. She stopped obeying Burn and focused on helping and healing the Skywings and defending the palace. She used gold from the throne room to build a hospital and bringing in doctors from other tribes. Dragons in the SkyWing kingdom actually liked her, and didn’t fear her like how they did with Scarlet. The Dragonets in the wingery loved Ruby, and they all thought she was loving and kind.
In WoF, Tourmaline was ambitious and acted like a queen even while Scarlet was still alive and queen. She was not the type to run away from her problems. Tourmaline desired to be a better ruler than her mother for the SkyWings and to take her tribe away from the War of SandWing Succession. She never wanted to let the SkyWings know when she was terrified because that way, they'd root for her when she challenged Scarlet.
