In wof, Turtle is a Seawing dragonet and the protagonist of Talons of Power. He is first mentioned in The Lost Heir and introduced in Moon Rising. In wof, Turtle is a member of the Jade Winglet and belongs to the Seawing royal family. He possesses the power of animus magic. Turtle has dark emerald-green scales with lighter green underscales and green eyes that have a hint of gold. He has large talons and is often seen wearing an armband studded with skyfire rocks, which block mindreaders from reading his thoughts. His voice is described as low and rumbly, and his face is round and anxious. Turtle’s appearance is quite similar to Fathom’s, so much so that even Darkstalker has trouble telling them apart at first.
In wof, Turtle is portrayed as nervous, anxious, and quiet. He is generally peaceful and friendly, rarely ever getting angry. Turtle is also fearful of failure, especially when it comes to meeting others' expectations. His self-esteem is low, and he is highly self-conscious about his animus magic. He tries to keep his power a secret to avoid causing harm or alarming others, though he becomes less fearful of his abilities after the events of Darkness of Dragons.
In wof, Turtle’s animus magic is first discovered when he accidentally commands an earring to go on his ear while dressing for a party. Realizing he has this power, Turtle decides not to tell anyone, planning to reveal it only when the world needs him, like the heroes in his mother's stories. However, when the time comes for him to use his magic, Turtle failed and ended up deciding to never reveal his powers, fearing he might fail and disappoint others. He eventually uses his animus power in Escaping Peril to heal Winter.
In wof, Turtle struggles with his animus magic, as described by Quibli. He finds it difficult to create effective spells on his own, and his spells tend to be oddly specific, often involving random objects. Some examples of his spells include a rock that only heals outer wounds, kelp that makes him slightly faster than some of his brothers, and a bowl that doubles the amount of anything placed inside it.
In wof, Turtle’s journey to prove himself as a hero takes a significant turn when he fails to protect the Seawing royal eggs. The eggs in the royal hatchery were being destroyed by an unknown force, so King Gill appointed guards to watch over the hatchery. Abalone and Snapper, the most recent guards, worked in shifts to keep the eggs safe. One day, King Gill arrived at the hatchery to find Abalone sick inside, so he urgently searched for someone to get Snapper and make her take the shift so that he could take Abalone to the healer. Turtle believed he could use his animus magic to find Snapper, so he used a coral that was supposed to lead dragons to whoever they were seeking. However, the coral kept trying to lead him outside the Deep Palace, leading Turtle to believe it was broken. In the end, King Gill took Abalone to the healers, leaving the eggs unprotected, and they were destroyed. King Gill and Turtle’s brothers blamed him for the loss of the eggs, and they might have never forgiven him if he hadn’t enchanted a seagull egg that granted forgiveness once eaten.
Later, in Talons of Power, Turtle encounters Queen Coral while searching for Anemone, who had been enchanted by Darkstalker to kill the Seawing royal family. Turtle apologizes to Queen Coral for the failure to protect the eggs, and she reveals that Snapper had been outside the Deep Palace that day, which was why Turtle couldn’t find him. After learning this, Turtle’s father forgives him, and Queen Coral vows to remember his name before he leaves to stop Anemone.
