In wof, Deathbringer is a NightWing assassin, first introduced in The Hidden Kingdom. He was sent by the NightWings to kill the Dragonets of Destiny. Later in the series, he falls in love and becomes the bodyguard of Queen Glory.
In wof, Deathbringer has black scales, black eyes, and black wings, with scattered silver scales that catch the morning light like trapped stars. When he was first introduced, he was smaller than large dragons like Morrowseer but slightly larger than Starflight. In wof, Deathbringer is incredibly strong and agile, moving with a smooth grace that reflects his training as an assassin. As a young dragonet, Deathbringer followed the orders of the NightWings without question, even carrying out tasks like killing a MudWing prisoner when instructed. He is intelligent, calm, and trustworthy, always completing his missions without hesitation. However, after a significant event involving his mother, Deathbringer changed his outlook. He came to value his loved ones over his missions and vowed to protect them above all else. Interestingly, he often feels uncomfortable around scavengers, likely due to his past confrontation with Wren.
In wof, Deathbringer was born on the volcanic island and is the son of an unnamed NightWing and Quickstrike, a skilled NightWing assassin. He was expected to follow in his mother's footsteps and become an equally skilled assassin. When he was four years old, Quickstrike sent him to spy on a conversation between Queen Battlewinner and her daughter, Greatness. There, Deathbringer learned that Quickstrike wanted to take him to the mainland to continue his training in the real world. To prove his skills, Deathbringer was tasked with killing either Slaughter or Vengeance during the night. Despite Morrowseer’s attempts to stop him, Deathbringer succeeded in his mission. Fearing the NightWings might punish him for his success, Quickstrike took Deathbringer and fled to the mainland.
In wof, Deathbringer’s first mission with Quickstrike was to assassinate a SeaWing commander named Tempest. During the mission, Quickstrike was struck by lightning and lost consciousness, leaving Deathbringer to complete the mission alone. In wof, Deathbringer found Commander Tempest alongside the SeaWing army, Blister and the MudWing army, who were allied with them at the time. When the other dragons lowered their weapons, Deathbringer took a MudWing spear and completed the mission. Blister, remaining calm, instructed the dragons to search the area, where they presumably found and killed Quickstrike. From that day on, Deathbringer vowed to prioritize his loved ones, even if it meant betraying his own tribe.
In The Hidden Kingdom, Deathbringer was assigned by the NightWings to kill some of the Dragonets of Destiny, following their disrespect towards Blister in the previous book. While waiting near the Ice Kingdom, Deathbringer encountered Glory, who was disguised as an IceWing guard. They spoke, and Deathbringer flirted with Glory, even suggesting they go on a date. This gesture is significant, as NightWings and IceWings are typically enemies, and it shows how much Deathbringer must care for Glory.
As their relationship developed, Deathbringer and Glory became close. He helped her escape from the Volcano Island, betraying his tribe to do so, and later became her bodyguard when Glory became Queen of the RainWings. His devotion to her is evident in his actions, and he consistently shows that he values her safety and happiness above all else.In the later books, Deathbringer continues to protect and assist Glory. In Winter Turning, he guards her against Icicle, who is plotting to assassinate her. In Talons of Power, he defends her throne when Darkstalker attempts to seize control of the NightWings.
