Winter Turning starts right after Moon Rising, where Prince Winter’s sister, Icicle, tries to kill Starflight. Luckily, Icicle was stopped, but she still got away. The reason she was trying to kill Starflight needs a little backstory. During the War of SandWing Succession, Winter and his brother, Prince Hailstorm, were in SkyWing territory looking for a scavenger den. They were jumped by a patrol of SkyWing soldiers, and Hailstorm was taken prisoner. The IceWing royal family desperately tried bargaining with the SkyWings to try and get them to release Hailstorm, but eventually, he was killed by NightWings in the SkyWing prison. Winter and his family were devastated when they heard the news, but there was nothing they could do now. That’s until Icicle was contacted by Scarlet (the SkyWing queen) in a dream. She said that Hailstorm was still alive and that he would be released if Icicle killed the Dragonets of Destiny.

Now, Winter knew that his brother was still alive, and if he were brought back, Winter’s rank in the tribe would improve tenfold. He didn’t trust Queen Scarlet, though, and planned to hunt her down and save Hailstorm himself, without killing for the insane queen. Winter’s plan was going well until he was intercepted by the rest of his winglet from the academy. They convinced him that he needed help and couldn’t save Hailstorm on his own. Winter yielded, and the members of Jade Winglet traveled to the rainforest to find Icicle. Their logic was that after failing to kill Starflight, she would go after Queen Glory of the RainWings, as she was the one Scarlet hated the most. The winglet met up with Glory and found out one of the RainWings living in the rainforest had seen an area with frozen plants, and they went to look at it.
When Jade Winglet got to the frozen spot, they noticed a trail leading to a buried body. Icicle had killed a NightWing scout. Later, they go to the old NightWing volcanic island and find Icicle. She is arrested by Queen Glory and incapacitated with a RainWing sleep dart. Moon, using her mind-reading, is able to see into Icicle’s dreams and find the place Scarlet is hiding. She draws it on a piece of paper, and Jade Winglet goes to find the Talons of Peace because they might have a SkyWing that knows where Moon’s drawing is. In Winter Turning Part Two, they meet the Talons, and one of their SkyWings (named Pyrite) agrees to help them look for Queen Scarlet’s hideout. When they are camping in the Sky Kingdom, one night, they are attacked by a mysterious NightWing who severely injures Kinkajou, the winglet’s RainWing, before he is defeated and flies away. Now, the four dragons need to get Kinkajou to a hospital so she can recover. Qibli the SandWing knows where a town called Possibility is, and there is a hospital there that they can take Kinkajou to. Before they leave, though, Winter attacks Pyrite under suspicion that she is an animus. He takes off her necklace, and she turns into Hailstorm; he was under a spell to look like and think like Pyrite! When they get Kinkajou to the hospital, Winter and Hailstorm leave the others behind to return to the Ice Kingdom alone, leading us into part three of Winter Turning.
---------
When Winter and Hailstorm arrive at the Ice Kingdom, the rankings are updated. Hailstorm’s name is placed back on the wall, but despite being in first place when he was captured, his absence means that he is now placed at the very bottom of the rankings. On the other talon, Winter, for saving Hailstorm is promoted to first place. If Hailstorm is going to get out of last place before he is fully grown, there’s only one thing he can do: challenge Winter in the Diamond Trial. The Diamond Trial is an ancient tradition where the IceWing at the bottom of the rankings can challenge the first-place member. Whoever survives is granted first place.
The next day, Winter and Hailstorm travel to the Diamond Caves and begin the Trial. They have to go in and, using special enchanted spears, poke a frozen dragon. They go in and find Foeslayer, an ancient NightWing encased in ice. They refreeze her and realize that one of them has to kill the other in order to win the Diamond Trial successfully. Winter tells Hailstorm to go out and say that he killed Winter, while Winter stays and escapes when no one is watching. Hailstorm agrees and leaves Winter, who unfreezes Foeslayer, who might be able to help the Jade Winglet stop a terrible prophecy from coming to fruition.
