The first time we meet Foeslayer chronologically in the Wings of Fire series is in the prologue of the legends novel Darkstalker and the winglet Runaway. At this time, she is loud, full of energy, and a little nervous and awkward. Most others don’t take her or the things she’s passionate about seriously. Her disposition is a little silly, but she is a good dragon. Foeslayer wouldn’t want to leave others in danger, but she also isn’t one to follow the rules.
Foeslayer is taken to the Ice Kingdom on a diplomatic mission, where she meets Arctic, an IceWing prince, and animus. The IceWing prince is amazed by this dragon who lives her life completely differently than he does. Where Arctic has been following orders, Foeslayer has never followed an order in her life. Despite being arranged to marry an IceWing named Snowflake, Arctic immediately falls in love with Foeslayer. During the time that she’s in the Ice Kingdom, she and Arctic meet in secret every night. Eventually, it comes time for Foeslayer to return to the Night Kingdom, but Prince Arctic doesn’t want to leave her. He runs off with the NightWings, leading the IceWings to believe that the four NightWing diplomats stole Arctic and their animus magic along with him.

Fast-forward a few years to Darkstalker. Foeslayer has grown up a bit since we last saw her, but she is still similar. Her relationship with Arctic has seemingly got worse since they first met. Perhaps the IceWing prince’s liberal use of his magic has had a negative effect on his soul. They are seen arguing with each other often. Foeslayer is patient and caring but has a little bit of pent-up anger deep inside her.
The NightWing doesn’t play a massive role in the Darkstalker plot. She is Darkstalker’s mother and acts as such, but she really doesn’t do anything notable. She is partially blamed for stealing Arctic and starting the war between the IceWings and NightWings and is imprisoned by Diamond, the IceWing queen.

After two millennia in the magic IceWing prison, we meet Foeslayer again in Winter Turning. She is not vengeful, though, and seems to forgive the IceWings for imprisoning her. Qibli found the NightWing hard to read; not friendly, but not hostile. After Darkstalker was turned into Peacemaker, Foeslayer was eager to start a new life with her dragonet and changed her name to Hope.
Winter and his brother, Hailstorm, find the ancient NightWing encased in ice as part of the Diamond Trial. Winter frees her as he thinks she can help find the Lost City of Night and stop a terrible prophecy. Later, Winter and Foeslayer meet Peril, a SkyWing with firescales, and Foeslayer leaves to get help after Winter is accidentally burned by Peril. She disappears for a while, but in Darkness of Dragons, Foeslayer helps Qibli find and rescue Tsunami, and near the end of the book, she tries convincing Darkstalker to eat an enchanted strawberry that will turn him into a new dragon without any of his previous memories.
