The Dragonet Prophecy begins in a cave under a mountain where the five dragonets from the prophecy are being raised by minders from the Talon of Peace. They learn about Pyrrhian history and politics from their minders but some have developed the yearning to leave and live a normal life outside of the cave. They decide to make a move when the NightWing, Morrowseer, visits and declares Glory, the RainWing, unworthy of being in the prophecy. The guardians then decided to kill Glory to appease the NightWings, so Clay and Tsunami swim out through the underground river and immediately run into a dragon who is revealed to be Queen Scarlet of the SkyWings, who follows the two back to the cave and captures them.
The prison the dragonets are placed in consists of pillars located around a giant arena where all the prisoners are chained together. Clay meets a strange dragonet named Peril, who is the queen’s champion. Different prisoners are forced to fight each other in the arena, and it is revealed that Peril’s scales are as hot as fire and she can burn her opponents with a simple touch. Eventually, after witnessing multiple arena fights, Clay befriends Peril and Tsunami and Starflight are pitted against each other. They refuse to fight and then Clay is forced to fight Peril. Because he was hatched from a blood red egg, Clay’s scales are resistant to Peril’s fire, so she can’t kill him. Queen Scarlet gets mad that they aren’t fighting which opens up an opportunity for Glory, who has been fairly inactive so far, to shoot the queen in the face with burning venom and the dragonets are able to escape.
In part three of The Dragonet Prophecy, they follow the Diamond Spray River to the Mud Kingdom in order to find Clay’s parents. They locate a MudWing village near a battlefield and run into Clay’s siblings who welcome him with open arms. They learn that MudWing parents don’t raise their children, the siblings do. Clay decides to stay with his friends, not his blood family and they travel east towards the Kingdom of the Sea, off to Book Two: The Lost Heir.

Clay is a kindhearted dragon. He will always do what he has to in order to protect his friends and is incredibly loyal. He’s not the brightest, contributing to the stereotype that MudWings are burly, but dumb. He is the heart of the dragonets, and helps them understand each other and come to agreements when they are fighting. Since he was hatched from a blood-red egg, his scales are impervious to fire and because he is a MudWing, he can breathe under water for extended periods of time, which allowed him to escape from the cave by swimming through the underground river.

The Talons of Peace play a very important role in The Dragonet Prophecy. The Talons of Peace are a small, underground group of dragons dedicated to fulfilling the prophecy and ending the war. They are made up of outcasts and rebels, most of whom cannot return to their own kingdoms. They were overseen by Morrowseer, who had come up with the prophecy. There were five Talons that were assigned to keep watch over the dragonets, but two were killed as they retrieved the eggs. The three that remained raised the dragonets, but the dragonets really didn’t like any of them, especially Kestrel the SkyWing. Dune was killed by Scarlet when she took the dragonets to her prison and Kestrel was killed by Blister and Morrowseer after they deemed her unnecessary, likely due to her failure to keep the dragonets contained.
