Prisoners
Prisoners is written from the perspective of Fierceteeth, as she writes letters with her prison guard while imprisoned in the Kingdom of Sand. She tells her guard, Saguaro, about her life on the NightWing island and how terrible it was. Her brother, Starflight, was one of the prophesied dragonets of destiny, so he got all the attention, even before his egg hatched. She always wanted to go onto the mainland. In her next letter, Fierceteeth tells the story of how she met the other NightWing prisoner, Strongwings. They met on the NightWing island after Strongwings had made Morrowseer angry. They escaped together through the magic tunnel to the mainland. When they got in trouble when they got back, Strongwings took the blame. The last letter outlines Fierceteeth’s plans for becoming the NightWing queen. Throughout the letters, she tries to convince her guard to escape with her, and in the end, he agrees.

Assassin
This story is the story of how Deathbringer became an assassin for the NightWings and is also my favorite of the four. It starts with Deathbringer trying to prove himself by killing one of two NightWings under cover after overhearing a meeting between his mother and the NightWing leadership. He finds Slaughter, his target, asleep, but Morrowseer wakes him up to talk to him before Deathbringer can kill him. The assassin kills Slaughter silently behind Morrowseer’s back, earning him a mission to Pyrrhia with his mother. They are instructed to kill a SeaWing military commander who, along with Blister, are close to winning the war. Deathbringer’s mother dies in a lightning storm, so he has to complete the mission on his own. The SeaWings, Blister, and MudWings meet on an island, and Deathbringer uses a MudWing spear to kill the SeaWing and cause them to think it was the MudWings’ doing, and split up their alliance.

Deserter
Deserter talks place from Six-Claws’ point of view. He lived in the palace as a dragonet and, one time, ran into another SandWing named Dune while trying to save one of the princesses from an approaching sandstorm. They were successful and rewarded by the king with positions in the army. There is a time jump, and we witness the death of Queen Oasis from Six-Claws’ perspective. They followed horse tracks left by the scavenger assassins and burned down their village. Following another time jump, Six-Claws and Dune are fighting IceWings in the north, and Dune gets severely injured by IceWings. Six-Claws brings him to the nurses and is confronted by Burn, who wanted to attack the MudWings in an attempt to scare them into an alliance. Six-Claws disagreed with this plan, believing that they were close to capturing Blaze in IceWing territory, which would effectively close that front. Outside, Six-Claws is confronted by a mysterious voice, which is hinted to be Deathbringer, who tries to convince him to leave the army and make a new life for himself in the Scorpion Den. Six-Claws isn’t convinced, and he goes back to try to convince Burn again. Burn didn’t change her mind and began mutilating Dune so that Six-Claws would agree. When he relented, Burn left, and the nurses tried their best to save Dune. One was somewhat successful, and she, Six-Claws, and Dune fled to the Scorpion Den.

Runaway
Runaway follows multiple characters in the Ice Kingdom as Prince Arctic falls in love with a NightWing, Foeslayer, instead of Snowflake, who he is supposed to marry. As Arctic and Foeslayer get closer, sneaking out to be together, Arctic and Snowflake’s relationship falls apart. Snowflake meets Snowfox, and the two scheme to get rid of Arctic and put Snowfox in place as queen. Arctic hides his feelings for Foeslayer from his IceWing family, but the queen suspects them and places guards in front of his room so that he can’t sneak out. The night Foeslayer is leaving, Arctic uses his animus magic for her, which he is only supposed to use once for the benefit of the whole tribe. In the end, Arctic and Foeslayer escape, with Arctic using his magic to freeze any dragons in their way. It is revealed that the NightWings had planned for Foeslayer and Arctic to fall in love so that they could have dragonets with animus magic. As they escape, Arctic’s magic accidentally kills some IceWing guards, and he feels incredibly guilty about that, but as they leave, we see the first signs of Arctic losing his mind to the magic.
